For Families

FOR FAMILIES:

How can I check if a child care agency is legitimate?

A general rule of thumb guide is to check whether the business has a website and they have a business email (not Gmail or Yahoo! for example); check their social media feeds - are they on platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn? AU PAIRIN’ Cape Town is also registered with The Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC).

FOR FAMILIES:

What’s the difference between a nanny and an au pair and their roles in South Africa?

In South Africa, our definition of nanny is very different to overseas. A nanny is someone who works in the home and looks after children usually under the age of 3 or 4 and does domestic work. They are not expected to transport children or supervise homework but may take the children on outings such as to a play park.

An au pair is not generally expected to do domestic work but to focus solely on the children– usually from school-going age. Their role can be viewed almost as in loco parentis; performing duties a stay-at-home parent would do. Au pairs are often college or university with a driver’s licence and a vehicle. They assist with homework, drive children to and from school and extra-murals and manage children’s daily schedules. They might become the parent’s representative when a parent is not available such as teacher’s meetings, doctor’s appointments and so on. They may also prepare children’s meals, snacks and get them ready for bedtime.

FOR FAMILIES:

How does your process work and what are your fees?

We send you an introduction which informs you about our service and process. Once you decide we are the right agency for you, we charge a R1500 once-off search and placement fee to find you your perfect match.

FOR FAMILIES:

Do all your nannies and au pairs have first aid training?

All registered team members must have a first aid certificate from either ourselves or another reputable agency. The candidates we train have been trained in-person as we believe that practical experience is essential especially when it comes to CPR for children. Our trainer is certified by the Department of Labour.

FOR FAMILIES:

Have potential employees had their references checked by your agency?

All our candidates are either trained or very experienced and to determine whether they are reliable, trustworthy and responsible, their references are checked before they are registered with our agency.

FOR FAMILIES:

Do I have to employ a nanny or au pair full time?

The short answer is no. You may only need a nanny on a part-time basis for a few days a week or an au pair for just a few hours a day. It’s up to you to decide what your needs are. You may, in fact, only want a temporary helper for a specific period.

FOR FAMILIES:

Do I need a nanny or an au pair?

Whether you need a nanny or an au pair is determined by your needs. The short answer, is tell us what your childcare needs are and we can help you make the right choice for your family.

FOR FAMILIES:

What questions should I ask the nanny /au pair in an interview?

Your priority when setting up questions is knowing what you need from the carer, and we suggest that you jot these down. This will help you to decide on the questions to ask. Try not to ask just yes or no answers; you want to get to know the person as much as is possible in a short interview.

FOR FAMILIES:

Can I employ a nanny/ au pair on a trial period?

Yes, you can and we recommend a period of 3 to 5 days. You should be very clear that doing this isn’t an opportunity to just have help for that time; that would be dishonest to say the least and could cause you a major headache. Employees are far more aware of their rights now.

FOR FAMILIES:

What should I pay my nanny / au pair?

From March 2023, a domestic worker (nanny) must, by law, receive a minimum of R25.42 per hour. This equates to an average 8 hours per day for 20 days a month and will be a minimum of just over R4,000 per month. Au Pair rates are different with the current average rate at an entry level minimum of R80 per hour.

FOR FAMILIES:

Should I pay a travel allowance to my au pair?

We recommend that either a fair sum is included (and agreed to) in the monthly rate or the SARS rate of R4.64 per km is paid for travel only while transporting your child/children.

FOR FAMILIES:

What about safe booster seats in the au pair’s vehicle?

It isn’t the au pair’s responsibility to provide the appropriate booster seat for children. Parents should supply these. We also recommend separate seats for the family vehicle and the au pair’s vehicle for safety reasons.

FOR FAMILIES:

Should we have a contract?

Absolutely! A contract is there to safeguard the rights of an employer and employee in the case of a dispute. It should include a clear job description, working hours, remuneration (including, overtime), leave days and a notice period.

FOR FAMILIES:

What about the Basic Conditions of Employment Act - what are the rules?

The Department of Labour has laid out very specific guidelines. Anyone who works more than 24 hours per month is covered by the Act. We recommend you familiarise yourself with the rules before you decide to appoint a nanny or au pair, especially on a permanent basis. Were commend this site for information:
